Hey, John!

I’m getting married there next year and I have a fashion question: Amy wants me to wear a nice black tux with a white shirt. I look great but it’s boring. I am a stand up comedian and I would love to interject my personality into this penguin suit.

Is there any way I can jazz up the look without being too “out there” for Amy?

Thanks!

Hey, Tyler!

You’ve got this!

First off, you have a bit more freedom of choice than you think. While historically with a tuxedo a bow tie was THE choice, that has now eased up and a regular tie is allowed with a tux. If you are wearing a suit, either a bow tie or a tie is acceptable.

Think of your suit jacket, pants, and shirt as the big canvas of your outfit. These are the parts of you that will be seen first and foremost by your bride and your guests. Now, think of the small parts of your ensemble—your tie (or bow tie), pocket square, and your socks. Yep, look down there because socks are becoming a huge part of weddings!

In the past, a man’s socks were usually the same shade of black as his trousers and his shoes so they just blended together.

At certain weddings, the groom and his I Do Crew wore white socks so there was a clear differentiation between their pants and their shoes. If they moved or danced, the white peaked out and was a fun change from black, black, black.

Recently, grooms and their crew  opted for brightly colored or patterned ties and pocket squares which leveled up their looks.

Now the trend extends down to the socks. Grooms and groomsmen are selecting a bow tie (or tie), pocket square, and socks in a bright pattern which are intended to capture attention.

One thing to consider: “Unexpected reds” is a 2025 wedding trend.

If you select a red tie, pocket square, and socks, you are tapping into two different trends (socks you notice and a shade of red) at the same time!
