New Wedding Trend: Officiant Stands to the Side!

One exciting new trend we are seeing at the weddings here at Ainsworth House & Gardens is that wedding officiant is standing in a slightly different location. Read on to find out where!

Hey, Christie!

Dallas and I are getting married at Ainsworth House & Gardens later this year. We’re so excited!!!!!!

Last night, I was going through my parents’  wedding photos. I noticed that Father Don–nice man that he is–was right in the middle of all the photos.

What bothered me was that I wanted to see photos that focused solely on my parents and until their kiss, there were none.

Without offending the officiant who will marry us, can I ask Father Mark to move over near the best man so that he’s not in all our photos and video?

Thank you for your answer!

–Hannah, Happy to be the Bride

Hey, Hannah!

We love working with you two on your amazing wedding!

It’s trending: At more weddings, the officiant stands to the side—either near the best man or  maid of honor. Since we have a great sound system, the officiant doesn’t have to be right in front of the couple.

Because the officiant is often dressed differently than the bridal party, the officiant still stands out and is easily identified in photos.  The photographer and videographer can then focus in on the joy and happiness expressed by the bride and groom—which makes for amazing pictures!

The great news is that there are no etiquette rules on where the officiant should stand but there is tradition: According to tradition or custom in many Christian weddings, the officiant stands facing the guests positioned in between the couple and one or two steps further back (further away from the guests).

What I would suggest is that you and your beloved talk this over: Do you want the officiant to stand off to the side? If so, which side? When you have your next meeting with your officiant, ask if she or he would mind standing a smidgen off to the left or right?  Come to an agreement with which each of you is happy!

Let me know if you have any other questions.
