Hey, John!

This New Year’s, I’m planning on asking Melissa to marry me.

Are there any 2024 engagement ring trends I should know when planning on her ring?

Thanks!

–Ben in Bend, Oregon

Hey, Ben!

Great question! There sure are!

Since more marriage proposals are made between Thanksgiving and Valentine’s Day, jewelry designers gear up to offer contemporary designs before this.

While our dads selected white or yellow gold to hold the largest diamond they could afford, you and I have so many more choices.

Trends for Stones:

  • Colored Gems: While sapphires, rubies, and emeralds have graced engagement rings for decades, we are seeing a trend for a greater variety of gemstones and more colors for each gemstone. For example, while Princess Eugenie has a sapphire engagement ring, it’s not your typical blue sapphire: She has pink Padparadscha sapphire. This year, canary yellow stones and blush pink diamonds are taking center stage.
  • Sustainable, Ethical Rings: Protecting our planet by proposing with an engagement ring from your grandmother’s jewelry box (with her permission, of course), buying an antique or vintage ring, or selecting lab-grown diamonds, ethically sourced gemstones, and recycled precious metals are all options for a sustainable engagement ring.

Trends for Settings:

  • Cathedral settings: Resembling the soaring arches of medieval European cathedrals, the cathedral setting is a wonderful choice if your beloved loves tradition!
  • In a cathedral setting, the center stone is surrounded by metal arches that launch up from the band to the stone.
  • From underneath, there is a basket look to the weaving of the arches.
  • From the top, the arches allow the center stone to be firmly held aloft and secure.
  • You might notice that this weaving of the arches looks like the doorways and ceilings of a Gothic cathedral.
  • Halo Settings: In the past, the halo setting was cherished for classic elegance and its ability to enhance the center stone’s brilliance.
  • In the past, the center stone of whatever shape was almost always a clear diamond.
  • For 2024, it might be a colored gemstone (e.g., a saffire or emerald) is the position of prominence!
  • The halo setting is beloved for its vintage feel, harkening back to an earlier time when couples stayed married longer.
  • For 2024, the halo setting is getting an upgrade by including stones of unique shapes and unconventional arrangements.
  • In 2024, halo setting is augmented by delicate patterns woven around the center stone to create a dazzling dance of light.
  • The supporting stones might be clear diamonds or a gemstone with color (e.g., rubies or garnets).
  • there are more varieties of the halo setting available now than ever before this!

Toi et Moi engagement rig Berlinger Jewelry
  • “Toi et Moi” Setting:  This design dates back to 1796, when Napoleon Bonaparte proposed to Josephine de Beauharnais.
  • “Toi et Moi” (meaning “you and me” in French) is a setting which in the past featured two stones of same color, same shape, and the same size to represent the two lovers.
  • For 2024, the stones might (or might not) have the same shape.
  • This year, the toi et moi setting is a getting an entirely fresh look: two stones of the same size but distinct colors—for example, a diamond and an eaquarmine–as seen in the image to the left. This allows you to design a ring with your two favorite stones or your two birth stones.

Trends for the Bands:

  • Double-banded engagement rings: Building on the fashion trend of stacking rings, this design takes that concept in a new direction.
  • Constructed from two bands elegantly spaced apart, the center stone seems to float effortlessly.
  • This grabs the attention of anyone gazing at the ring.
